A strong spring with high water quality. As early as 371 AD, the Roman traveler and poet Ausonius described the Heidenpütz as a "bubbling tabernae" in his travelogue "Mosella" when he was traveling from Bingen to Trier. Later excavations finally revealed traces of Roman settlement around the source. The well room was built in 1910 and has served as a water supply for Heinzerath ever since. In 1970 the municipality of Veldenz, which repeatedly ran into water shortages in the summer, asked the municipal council to expand the source at Heidenpütz and the Elzerath source area below the Roman road by means of deep boreholes. After long negotiations, the project was finally approved because water, as a common good, should be sufficiently available to everyone. The Moselle community of Veldenz connected two boreholes 40 meters deep. A new elevated tank was built for all places above Elzerath, the elevated tank on the Hundfeld and the well room were shut down in 1990.
