The station was built from 1912 according to plans by Eugen Göbel, but only opened in 1921 with only one track. However, construction was completed much earlier. An extension to Beimoor station was originally planned. The dam and the station building were already finished, but planned armaments factories were abandoned after the First World War and with the Treaty of Versailles. A double-track sweeping track system was opened on the dam in 1932 and the second platform track was reopened. In 2007 the track systems were modernized and an elevator was installed.

The Großhansdorf underground station is the final stop of the Großhansdorfer junction of the Hamburg underground line U1 and a good starting point for tours of all kinds in the area.

The station has a central platform around 120 meters long on the embankment. It is parallel to the street Schaapkamp and ends at the corner of Schaapkamp / Eilbergweg, which is crossed by a bridge after the platform.
