The Red Monastery is one of the most famous religious buildings in the Pieniny Mountains. In other words - don't go any further, just stop here for a while!

The construction of the monastery was ordered by Master Kokosz Berzeviczy for committing a murder - in the 14th century. He was supposed to build 6 monasteries and order 4000 masses! - to make sure that the soul of the murdered would have peace.

The whole history of this monastery is turbulent, and it is worth reading about it - pieniny.net.pl/atrakcje-czerwony-klasztor.html

On the old trade route from Hungary to Poland, near a ford over the Dunajec River, before it cut through the Pieniny Mountains, a hermitage was built, where the monastery was founded in 1320. As atonement for the murder of a provost of the Teutonic Knights of Šariš, Master Kokos donated the village of Lechnica to the Carthusians of the Rock of Refuge (Skala útočišťa) in 1319 for the establishment of a monastery. Charles I Robert signed the founding charter in 1320, but construction of the monastery did not begin until 1330.

If you are in the Pieniny National Park on the Slovakian-Polish border on the Dunajec river, the monastery should be visited. Entry 3 EU.
