Vlietlanden, sometimes referred to as the Maaslandse Vlietlanden (and not to be confused with the recreational area Vlietland opposite Voorschoten and between Leiden and Leidschendam), is one of the few lowland peat areas in the Netherlands that has never been reclaimed.

The area is managed by Natuurmonumenten and is not accessible by land because it is too vulnerable, too wet and too marshy.
The waterways around the area are accessible for canoes and rowing boats that you can rent in the area.

You can enjoy the view from the top

This object most resembles a large springboard that you encounter in a swimming pool. Only, here it is not the intention to jump from it, but to enjoy the view over the Boonervliet and the Vlietlanden behind it. This is a unique piece of reed land that has never been reclaimed, so it has remained at its (more or less) original height. The surrounding polders have subsided several meters because that is where the groundwater has been systematically being pumped out to obtain usable grassland. The Vlietlanden with its beautiful nature: rare flowers such as Rietorchis, and animals such as the Northern vole, is managed by Natuurmonumenten.
