    With the conquest of the Rhineland by the Romans, there was also the possibility of increased clearing and land grabbing for the previously remote southwest Hunsrück. The lively relief landscape between the high forests in the south-east and the Moselle valley in the north-west, which was only used by hunters and gatherers in the Stone Age, was only made accessible through road construction measures by the Romans. The most important long-distance connection in Roman times ran from the Mediterranean through the Rhone and Saön valley to the Rhine. Two roads led from Trier to Mainz: As an alternative to the Moselle route, the Roman road running here led as a faster and shorter route over mountains and valleys to unite with the Ausonius road at the height of "Heidenpütz" near Elzerath. It was mainly used by single-axle touring cars and light military units. It was a "Roman expressway".
