    HISTORY OF THE PARISH:

    1846

    In a letter, Bishop János Scitovszki of Pécs asks Count Kázm Batthyány to provide a room in the Harkány manor house for the purpose of a chapel. The landlord rejected the request due to lack of space, but offered to donate land for the purpose of the chapel.

    1877

    The Harkány Bath Committee starts collecting donations.

    1905

    Count Lajos Benyovszky, the owner of the Siklós estate, is donating an area of 200 squares for the construction of a chapel. In the same year, work began according to the plan of architects Schlauch and Károlyi.

    1906

    The chapel is consecrated on the Feast of the Heart of Jesus, but at that time Mass is still held in it occasionally.

    From 1913

    Every other Sunday and public holidays, Mass is said in the chapel.

    1914

    From 1 June to 15 September, the Holy See authorizes the preservation of the Sacrament of the Altar in the chapel.

    1922

    Mass is celebrated in the chapel every Sunday and public holiday.

    1925-26

    A plan to set up an independent pastoral or parish came up.

    1932

    The first solemn farewell of the chapel is held on the Feast of the Heart of Jesus.

    1936

    The idea of enlarging the chapel is also raised among the faithful, and they begin collecting for this.

    1940

    Construction is postponed due to wartime.

    1944

    They build the choir, modernize the lighting, design the new sacristy, paint the interior of the chapel.

    1986-88

    Years of the expansion of the chapel.

    1988

    Dr. József Cserháti, Bishop of Pécs, consecrates the new church.

    1989

    Harkány parish rises to the rank.

    2006

    We are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the consecration of the chapel.
