"Mon aise", French "my leisure" or "my ease" was the summer residence of the later Trier Domprobst Philipp Franz Graf von Walderdorff. Built in 1779-1783 in the style of French early classicism or Louis Seize, it is today one of the few examples - according to plaque on the castle itself, even the only - example of this style on German soil.

The castle is located directly on the cycle path on the west side of the Moselle. Today there is a restaurant of fine cuisine. Although this is not suitable as a stop for a snack, the castle itself is very nice to look at and to combine with a tour along the Moselle super.

The early neoclassical palace, which is historically closely linked to Zewen and to today's Zewen district of Oberkirch, was built by François Ignace Mangin in 1779-1783 as a summer residence for the Trier cathedral dean and later Prince-Bishop of Speyer, Philipp Franz Wilderich Nepomuk von Walderdorf. It was built as a pleasure palace with large representative rooms on the first floor, a simple upper floor (for the servants) and a large terrace and staircase and is surrounded by a park. For this purpose, Oberkirch's "sister village" Niederkirch was demolished.

Schloss Monaise is a beautiful castle. It was built in the 18th century as a summer residence and is only a few meters from the banks of the Moselle. Since 1997, Schloss Monaise has been shining again in its original, typically kept color of the Louis-Seize style.

You pass the beautiful castle when you drive on the bike path along the Moselle. It is worth taking a short break here for a tour. The castle is surrounded by a small park.

Monaise Castle (from French "mon aise" "my leisure", "my lightness", "my comfort", "my comfort", "my serenity", "my calm" - according to the Latin motto under the coat of arms: "Otium cum dignitate") on the Moselle has belonged to the Euren district of Trier since the "ban dispute" in 1853, together with the estate.
Architecturally speaking, Monaise is perhaps the best-preserved example of a late 18th-century suburban villa in Germany. (Source: Wikipedia)

After thorough renovation between 1992 and 1997, Monaise Castle, which is owned by the city of Trier, is now used as a restaurant. The estate is now an equestrian facility for the Trier Post Sports Club (Wikipedia).

The castle can only be viewed from the outside!

Only 150 years ago, the early classicist castle was surrounded by dense forests and lived up to its name "Mon aise" ("My comfort"). Today, an industrial area has built over large parts of the former forest area, but the charm of the only building in the Louis Seize style on German soil remains undiminished, especially after its renovation at the end of the 1990s.

In its day, Monaise Castle was a highly modern building that deliberately distanced itself from the curved and highly decorative elements of the Rococo. Accordingly, despite its central risalit with columns, Monaise appears almost plain - an impression that the extensive garden and interior design have probably corrected. Monaise Castle was built as a summer residence for the Trier cathedral dean Philipp Franz von Walderdorff, who had his life motto "Otium cum dignitate" ("Leisure with dignity") affixed to his coat of arms on the front - a motto that can still be followed today at celebrations in the castle.
