Embark on a difficult 9.9-mile (15.9 km) loop from the Sanctuary of San Magno, a hike that demands very good fitness and alpine experience. This challenging route features a significant elevation gain of 3128 feet (953 metres) and typically takes about 6 hours and 48 minutes to complete. You will traverse varied terrain, including alpine and mountain hiking paths, as well as sections on paved and unpaved roads. From Monte Tibert, enjoy splendid panoramic views across the entire Alpine arc, stretching from the Maritime Alps to Cozie, offering a true sense of solitude in raw, wild nature.
This trail is rated as hard, requiring sure-footedness, sturdy shoes, and potentially specialist equipment for some highly technical or hazardous sections. The starting point at the Sanctuary of San Magno is easily accessible, but be prepared for a full day on the trail. The Sanctuary of San Magno, built in 1400, serves as a beautiful and ancient starting point, adding a cultural dimension to your outdoor experience. As you hike, you will encounter Colle Fauniera, a high mountain pass at 2,481 metres, known for its recognition in the Giro d'Italia cycling race. This pass, also called Colle dei Morti, features a monument dedicated to cyclist Marco Pantani and offers a genuine alpine experience due to its remote location and limited vehicle traffic.
