The name of the castle comes from one of the largest villages in the south of Växjös, which was formerly called Telestad. The Swedish word borg means castle or castle. At the turn of the 18th century to the 19th century, the village was also called Teleborg after a territorial reform after the castle built at that time.
The builder, Count Gustav Fredrik Bonde, had the castle built around 1900 for his wife Anna Koskull as a wedding present. The design of the building was inspired by the medieval castles of the Rhine Valley.
The city of Växjö bought the Teleborg property in 1964 for 3.7 million Swedish kronor.

The slightly eccentric Count Fredrik Bonde af Björnö had Teleborg Castle built as a morning present for his young wife Anna Koskull. The castle was ready for occupancy in 1900 and the phrase "What a farmer does not do for his cousin" became popular among the residents of Växjö. For Fredrik Bonde, only the best was good enough and he didn't save anything to give his fiancée something very special.
Two Scandinavian architects, Harald Boklund and August Lindvall, were hired by Count Bonde and had to follow his very careful instructions. Granite and bricks were collected in Torpa near Växjö and in the vicinity of Västervik. The country's most skilled plasterers and decorative painters were hired, chimneys and tiled stoves transported from Gothenburg and ironwork from Copenhagen. In total, the construction of the castle cost 192,772 SEK and 80 ore - a considerable sum at the time. When the castle was finished, Fredrik and his wife Anna moved in. However, happiness did not last long. The count died only nine years later and his wife, who died in 1917, survived him for eight years. The couple had no children and it was Count Christer's nephew who inherited the castle.
He tried to open Teleborg as a castle inn and attracted visitors with electric light, beautiful surroundings and ice skating on the Trummensee. After that, the castle was rented out as a girls' pension for ten years. In 1931 Christer Bonde returned and took possession of the castle in his own name and at the same time laid out a castle park. In 1956 his son Fredrik Ulf Bonde took over the castle and until 1964 the castle was mainly used as the summer residence of the owner's sister Ulla Bonde. The town of Växjö bought the property in 1964 and today the castle is owned by Videum AB and leased by Runosson & Co.
