The average altitude is 171 meters above sea level and the area is 8.59 square kilometers. If the 2 upstream catchment areas are included, this results in a cumulative area of 20.47 square kilometers. The Bergunda Canal, which drains the catchment area, has a tributary order 2, which means that the water flows through a total of 2 watercourses before reaching the sea after 114 kilometers. The catchment area has 0.76 square kilometers of water surface, which corresponds to a sea level of 8.8%. The buildings in the area cover an area of 7.34 square kilometers or 85% of the catchment area.

The lake is a very bird-rich lake with many ducks and Canada geese.

Växjösjön was previously heavily polluted and eutrophied. An official report from 1901 states: “Växjösjön cannot serve any purpose other than a large storage tank for the city's sewage”. Nowadays most of the wastewater is treated in sewage treatment plants. However, eutrophication remains an environmental problem that the community is working on.
