We actually planned to cross the mountain from here in mid-May and hike to Alagna Valsesia (highest point at about 2600m).
From 2020m, it was impossible to go any further due to the snow! We had to turn around, hike back to Quarrazza, and take a rather inconvenient public transport route via Domodossola and Novara to roughly where we wanted to go (instead of 25km over the mountain, it was about 125km by car or about 6 hours by public transport). So carefully consider the time of year and what equipment you plan to use for this hike. It's extremely dangerous with regular hiking gear and definitely not possible if there's snow on the trail!
