People were already living in the settlement area around Wesenufer in the Neolithic period (5000 to 1800 BC). This is proven by a serpentine hole hammer found in 1920, which is now kept in the Upper Austrian State Museum in Linz. In 1938, a hole axe from the same era was found in the former school in Wesenufer. A full-handled sword dates from the late Bronze Age (1200 to 750 BC) and is kept in the Natural History Museum in Vienna.

About 0.5 kilometers below Wesenufer, on a plot of land directly on the Danube, the Frauenwiese, coins from the time of the Roman emperors Severus Alexander (222 to 235 AD) and Tacitus (275 to 276 AD) were found.

On July 13, 1310, Erchenger von Wesen documented that he had bequeathed the house of Wesen and thus the goods of aines datz Wesen uerfar and the Uerfar to Hademar von Waldeck. This is the first mention of Wesenurfar, i.e. Überfahrt for Wesen (as a Danube crossing). Wesenufer is a new formation of this mention. Wesen (later Wesenurfar and Wesenufer) is therefore the oldest Danube town in Upper Austria, alongside Aschach (777) and Linz (799).

1837: On October 22, Ludwig I's first steamship sails from Wesenufer to Linz.

The boat dock is located in the market town of Wesenufer, directly in front of the "Seminarkulturhaus an der Donau" and next to a traditional inn - centrally located between Engelhartszell and the Schlögener Schlinge and close to the bridge that leads to the Mühlviertel. Many excursion options and great views of nature make this section of the Danube so special. A view over green hills, wooded slopes, colorful meadows and rolling fields of corn: this wonderful view of the surrounding area and the four Upper Austrian quarters is offered by the overwhelming "four-quarter view". But a hike through the "Kößlbachtal" nature reserve also becomes more attractive with every step and with every look down to the foaming waters of the Kößlbach.
