Bad Schmiedeberg belonged until 1815 to the Electorate or Kingdom of Saxony Office Wittenberg, then until the Second World War to the Prussian province of Saxony, after 1945 to the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Since 1952, the city belonged to the GDR district Halle. Since 1990 it is located in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt.
In 1878, the city founded the Municipal Iron Moor Bath, in 1925 Schmiedeberg was awarded the official title of "Bad".
