A boundary marker with a story.
Every monument or monumental object tells its own story. This border marker was placed after independence between Belgium and the Netherlands in 1843.
On February 29, 1904, the original boundary marker was lowered deep below the road surface for road safety and to prevent theft during road reconstruction.
Exactly 100 years later, on February 29, 2004, the border marker was made visible again and relocated a short distance from the place where it was previously buried. The accompanying official report was signed by the mayors of Essen, Kalmthout and Woensdrecht.
At that - actual border point - a stainless steel bus can still be seen in the asphalt.
!!! CAREFULLY !!! You will find this point at the intersection Bredestraat - Weg naar Wouw, approximately 15 meters northwest of the new site of Grenspaal 246.
