The Holzfrauenstäffele (Wooden Women's Steps) is a striking sandstone formation in the Ebnether Forest. Its name derives from the legends of the "Holzfräulein" (Wood Maidens) – shy forest spirits who, according to local tradition, were said to live in the crevices and caves of the Ebnether sandstone cliffs. The "Stäffele" (Franconian for small staircase or step) was once a popular viewpoint. Today, however, the surrounding trees have grown so tall that instead of a sweeping panorama, one primarily encounters impressive sandstone cliffs and dense forest.
