Nature conservation, recreation area and water experience through renaturation
At this Wasser.Blick you can get very close to the water. Large blocks of natural stone serve as stepping stones across the river and thus enable an unusual perspective of the Schwalm habitat. Children and adults alike can go on a journey of discovery by the water. Gabion benches and other seating options on the shore are nice places to rest and rest. The hustle and bustle on the river can be wonderfully observed from here. For a long time, the Schwalm in Wegberg's city park was squeezed into a narrow bed with steep embankments. The straight course of the water with the trapezoidal profile offered hardly any habitat for animals and plants and little experience value for the visitors of the city park. A sill with a fall height of 40 centimeters also prevented fish and other stream creatures from passing through. In the fall of 2011, the excavators moved in to cut the approximately 100-meter-long
to transform the section back into a near-natural stream bed. As in nature, the width of the river bed and the incline of the embankment now vary after the redesign. The river seeks its way in wide curves and stones and dead wood scattered in the water bed create areas with reduced flow, which are used by stream dwellers as quiet zones or spawning grounds. If you have enough time, it is worth making a detour from here to Wegberg's city center and the Tüschenbroicher mill.
