Ludwigshafen has a rich history that began in 1145 with its first mention as Sernatingen. In 1810 it fell to Baden as part of a border treaty, but it was not until 1826 that Grand Duke Ludwig von Baden gave the newly constructed port its current name, Ludwigshafen. The magnificent customs house with the inscription "Großherzogliches Baden's main customs office" and the coat of arms of Baden on the shipping pier is a witness to times gone by. It was rebuilt in the 1990s and is now the town hall, community and guest center.
