Madrid, which is located halfway between Santa Fe and Albuquerque, was once a ghost town deserted by its inhabitants.

Today it is a village with barely 150 inhabitants. The colorful mailboxes and houses, as well as the quirky sculptures along the main road, make it clear to you that artists call the area home, and that you are welcome.

This location, 22 miles southwest of Santa Fé on NM-14, was made famous by the 2007 film "Born to be Wild - Into the Wild" (original title: Wild Hogs). The main actors included John Travolta and Tim Allen. Madrid used to be an uninhabited so-called "ghost town", today there are about 150 inhabitants in the small village, mostly artists.

Best cycling during a week day, less traffic on Turquoise Trail #14. Not much of a bike lane into Madrid or beyond.
