  • Sensoji (浅 草 寺, Sensōji, also known as Asakusa Kannon Temple) is a Buddhist temple in Asakusa. It is one of the most colorful and popular temples in Tokyo.
Legend has it that two brothers fished a statue of the goddess of mercy, Kannon, from the Sumida river in 628, and although they put the statue back in the river, it kept coming back to them. Consequently, Sensoji was built nearby for the goddess Kannon. The temple was completed in 645, making it the oldest temple in Tokyo.
