Konstantinos Karamanlis was born here in Proti. His parents are buried here, as are his two brothers.
Karamanlis was a formative politician for Greece in the 20th century. He was Prime Minister from 1974 to 1980. He introduced Greece to the EEC, later the EU.
In 1978 Karamanlis received the Charlemagne Prize of the city of Aachen.
