The remains of this luxurious Roman villa lie just off the Cotswold Way and are a must-see for anybody hiking the route. The English Heritage site is free to enter and you are treated to incredible views over the surrounding countryside from the villa. The site is open 10am to 6pm, daily, from April until October, and 10am to 4pm from November until March.
Once at the heart of a large country estate, Great Witcombe Roman Villa was built around AD 250 and lived in until the 5th century. The remains include a bathhouse complex and the shrine of a water spirit.
