The power plant was built on the foundations of a 1918 burned water mill and took 1922 the operation on. Operators of the combined diesel and hydroelectric power station were the Mecklenburg-Schwerin state-owned power stations (LEW). The power of the two water turbines was about 120 kilowatts. Furthermore, four former submarine diesel engines were available, 1925 were added two more diesel engines. Together, the installed capacity was many times the output of the water turbines. The tower of the E-Werk was used as fuel storage. The diesel engines were dismantled in late 1945 as reparations and spent in the Soviet Union. In 1961, the diesel power plant went back to the grid. Already before, in 1956, another hydroelectric power station started operating in the Lewitzschleuse hydroelectric power station in the north of Neustadt-Glewes. The diesel engines in the inner city power plant were removed in the 1980s. From the beginning, three-phase current was generated for the nationwide high-voltage grid.

In 1998, WEMAG sold the power plant together with the hydropower plant on the Lewitzschleuse to a private operator. The vacant workshop is rented, including a local party club, which organizes events here about five times a year.

The old Neustadt-Glewe power station is a run-of-river power station on a right branch of the river Elde. Until the 1980s, diesel generators were also used to generate electricity. The power station with the machine house, administration building and half-timbered shed is a listed building.
