There is no certainty about the name of this beautiful lake. There are different stories about it. One of the stories that can explain the name says that 'doodemans' (short, thick, sausage-shaped bunches of wicker) were used as formwork to close off the depression in the dunes when the current Groene Strand was still the white beach ( the Noordvaarder was then still a loose sandbank off the coast of Terschelling) and the parallel dunes formed the foredune. If that were true, there was logically also an open connection with the sea. Another name explanation could be a reference to a drowning graveyard, which could possibly have belonged to the Lutine. The ship full of bars of gold that was wrecked near Terschelling.
