De Drie Koornbloemen was the first malt mill in 43 years that was built on behalf of a "Compagnieschap van interesseden", or distillers: businessmen who were involved in the jenever industry, something that Schiedam was (and is) known for since ancient times.

The mill did not grind for those (then 18) distillers for very long, because in 1814 it became a 'bakers' mill'.

In 1844 a major renovation followed: the millstones were moved to a higher attic and were expanded to four. Two hulling stones were also added, with which, at least until 1917, mainly rice was hulled. All this was done on behalf of Willem Kouwenhoven, who was the owner from 12 March 1831. He was also the one who, probably in 1832, built a house in the mill and had a small house built against the mill. The side wall of an adjacent building of the Vlaardinger Poort and the connecting wall between the mill and the gate were used, so that the house got a somewhat strange appearance. Building one wall and a roof on it was sufficient. Large windows were also made in the body of the mill. In addition to grinding and peeling, the mill was also used at the time for sawing mahogany.

De Drie Koornbloemen is the oldest distillation mill in Schiedam
