At the turn of the century (1900), the planning of a strategic railway line between Rommerskirchen and Neuss began in order to transport the coal extracted from the Bergheim lignite mining district more quickly to the port in Neuss. Preparatory work began in 1907, and construction began in 1913. After the end of the First World War, work had to be stopped for the time being, but construction continued until 1923. After that, the work was finally stopped because the economic necessities for the route no longer existed.
