On September 15, 2018, Mariawald—the last Trappist monastery in Germany—was dissolved. The abbey had been under the care of the Vatican's Congregation for Religious Affairs since 2014. The monastery was closed due to a lack of new members and to care for the very elderly monks there, as their care could no longer be guaranteed on-site.

Restaurants, a bookstore, liqueur production, and online shipping will continue, and a guesthouse with overnight accommodation and meals will be rebuilt. "All jobs will be retained," it was stated.
