The natural monument "Dagersheimer Berg quarry" is a valuable biotope for the crested newt, green toad, yellow tooth rust and many other animal and plant species.

Women are usually considered to be the more attractive sight. Not so with the crested newt. The reproductive male impresses with a strongly jagged ridge of skin on the back. To feel good, he needs a crested newt lady and a fish-free pool with aquatic plants to hide and lay eggs. He prefers land animals such as insects, snails and worms as food.

Unfortunately, the crested newt, which is protected throughout Europe, has a habit that is its undoing: it likes to stay on land under stones and wood. Because if a pond dries up, this hiding place is the only way to survive until a rain donates water.
