The reed sandstone broken here was created in the Keuper period about 180 million years ago as a deposit in an approx. 2 km wide delta river channel running southwest through the mountains.
While it only occurs in traces apart from it, it is 18 m here, up to 25 m on the head of the basket and emerges as a clear step in the terrain. It was coveted as a building and a sculptural stone.
