The place where the sanctuary is located today was donated to Saint Francis by Count Orlando Cattani of Chiusi in 1213. First a hermitage was founded which became a recurring destination for Francis and his disciples for periods of meditation and prayer. Francis stayed here for the last time in 1224. It was precisely on the occasion of that last visit that the Saint received the stigmata. The complex includes the small church of Santa Maria degli Angeli built by Francis himself, the corridor and the Chapel of the Sacred Stigmata and the Basilica dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta where you can admire the Annunciation by the sculptor Andrea della Robbia. The sanctuary is surrounded by the monumental forest of La Verna, a forest of fir and beech trees cared for over the centuries by the Franciscan friars.

The sanctuary of La Verna is the place where Saint Francis received the stigmata. A place much loved by the saint who took refuge here in prayer whenever he could. Even today there is a mystical atmosphere. If you are a pilgrim you can stay overnight in the sanctuary's guesthouse (half board with dinner included). It's worth it to enjoy the silence of the place after the daily pilgrims have left and the sanctuary doors have closed. A visit to the library organized by the friars and reserved for guests of the guesthouse is also recommended. It's worth leaving a little later but after hearing the stories from the library.

In this place, Francis is said to have received the stigmata of Christ in 1224.

The Sanctuary of La Verna is located in the Tuscan Apennines. The mountain, covered with a monumental fir and beech forest, has a distinctive appearance as the peak (1283 sea level) bends over the valley in steep drops. Perched above the sheer cliff and surrounded by a surrounding forest is the sanctuary's hole unit, which preserves within its massive and articulated structure several treasures of art, culture and history.
In the summer of 1224, Saint Francis retired to the mountain for his usual spiritual practices and silence. During his stay, he asked God from the bottom of his heart to participate in the Passion of Christ, a mystery of love and sorrow. The Lord heeded his words and appeared to him as a crucified seraph who gave him the seals of the Passion. 'Francesco' became a visible and concrete image of Christ, not only in his heart, mind and soul, which already were, but also in his outer body.
The Stigmata episode along with Francis' lifestyle are the most prized things given to his brothers at La Verna. The important spiritual heritage of St. Francis not only deals with each individual monk in the monastery, but also becomes the main tool that the community wants to convey to everyone who visits La Verna.

Here you find yourself at the foot of the rock, which is cut vertically, and look up to the sky to admire the magnificence of the rock! The path from Rimbocci up to La Verna is quite strenuous because you have to overcome a large difference in altitude (a good 600m) in just a few km. It leads to an old donkey path, on which you continue uphill with a steep incline to the monastery.

The Holy Mountain of La Verna, as “the raw rock between the Tiber and the Arno…” is called, is the place where the “stigmatized” Francis wanted to relive the same torments that Christ suffered on Calvary. The monastery is located on the Alverna elevation on the southwest slope of Monte Penna north of Chiusi della Verna at 1,128 meters. Places worth seeing in this place of pilgrimage are the Basilica of St. Mary, Queen of Angels (S. Maria degli Angeli) and the chapel of the same name, the so-called “Outstanding Rock” (Sasso Spicco), the Corridor of the Stigmata and the Chapel of the Stigmata (Cappella delle Sacrestimmate).

Is it necessary to comment on the Sanctuary of La Verna? Wonderful place. It opens at 6.30am and closes at 9.30pm. It welcomes pilgrims in a dormitory with bunk beds for about twenty people, perhaps more but with only 1 bathroom and shower. The pilgrim welcome is perhaps a little sacrificed and barely sufficient. It also offers hospitality in the guesthouse... with other prices however.
