A first building was under Augustus towards the end of the 1st century BC. built. The theater was a grand structure for its time, seating up to 2500 spectators. Towards the end of the 2nd century, however, it was enlarged and its capacity increased to around 4000 spectators.

The theater's central entrance was remodeled by Ragonius Vincentius Celsus in the 4th century. He erected a statue of the Roma, which is still visible behind the east nymphaeum, and laid the basement of statues in the Piazzale delle Corporazioni, which by then was already in a state of disrepair.

In its heyday, the theater of Ostia Antica, together with the Piazzale delle Corporazioni behind it, formed a magnificent complex that housed the offices of the city's most important merchants and businessmen.

The theater building has been restored several times over the centuries, but despite the structural changes, it has retained its original allure. Today, the theater of Ostia Antica is used for numerous cultural events, such as concerts, theatrical performances, ballet and cabaret.
