Alderman's Barrow is one of the many ancient burial mounds on Exmoor and is particularly pronounced. As a result, it's been used as a boundary marker since the medieval period at least, and continues to mark a parish boundary today.

Next to the barrow is an antiquity star, one of the few remaining. During the Second World War, there was extensive artillery and infantry training on the moor. To protect the numerous ancient monuments, earthworks and burial mounds (antiquities), these metal stars were erected so military personnel could avoid damaging them.
