Before the Reitdiep was separated from the North Sea in the course of the dyke-up, Noorderhaven was the first port in the city to be used by seagoing ships. Therefore, Noorderhaven was the most important trading port in Groningen in the 16th and 17th centuries. Currently, only well-maintained historic ships are allowed to dock in the port, the backdrop of which is enhanced by several listed buildings. Among other things, the many tall masts regularly create attractive motifs. In winter Noorderhaven is the venue for the Winterwelvaart event.
