Despite the large number of tourists, the view from the Marienbrücke to Neuschwanstein Castle and the Pöllat Gorge is very worthwhile! The bridge is open again!

In 1845, King Maximilian II had a wooden horse bridge built over the Pöllat. It was built using conventional wooden construction methods, but was probably not particularly stable, as it had to be replaced just a few years later. To increase the strength, a triple-layered beam construction with side supports was chosen, a construction that was not particularly aesthetically pleasing given its span of 35 meters.

This was precisely the reason why King Ludwig II had this bridge replaced in 1866 by a delicate iron construction by the Gustavsburg workshops of the Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft Nürnberg, Klett & Comp. (now M.A.N.). During the construction of the Marienbrücke, a completely new construction method was successfully tested for the first time: Ninety meters above the Pöllatfall, the supports were erected by projecting the individual support sections from the anchors fixed in the rock on both sides, without any additional supporting armor.

In 1984, the bridge was restored, and the supports had to be replaced. The railings have been preserved in their original state to this day.

The Marienbrücke was closed at the beginning of August 2015 due to renovation work on the bridge's rock anchors. During the renovation, damage to the rock anchors was repaired and the coating of the metal structure and the wooden covering were renewed. The renovation costs amounted to around 650,000 euros. On August 4, 2016, the bridge was officially reopened by the district administrator of the Ostallgäu district and the Bavarian Finance Minister Markus Söder.

From the beginning of 2021 to mid-2022, the Marienbrücke was closed because all rock anchors had to be replaced due to static problems.
