The main purpose of the route was to remove the Flonheim sandstone from the local sandstone quarries for the company's own railway structures such as the Kaiserbrücke or Mainz main train station. With the crossing station of the two lines Bingen – Alzey – Worms and Mainz – Alzey in Armsheim, the most important cities in Rheinhessen could be opened up. The line was opened on December 31, 1871, but could not be fully driven to Wendelsheim until July 1, 1895. Passenger traffic was stopped on September 25, 1966, freight traffic only on January 1, 1995. There was one at the Wendelsheim terminus Loading ramp for military purposes, which was also occasionally used by the Bundeswehr and US bases in the Mörsfeld / Kriegsfeld / Gerbach area.
