For a long time, people from Zwolle drank water from pumps or from the canal with all the risk of contamination. It was quite an improvement when, from 1892, clean drinking water was supplied from the 'Zwolle forest'. Water was led to the pumping station through a kilometer-long sunken trench in the forest, called the Kret. This deepened trench is clearly visible from the walking path that partly runs through and along it.
