Bremetennacum was a Roman cavalry fort that guarded a crossing on the River Ribble. Established sometime around 70 AD, it was one of many such defensive forts across northern Britannia. It is likely there were dwellings next to the fort on the site of what is today the village of Ribchester, including a bath house and at least two temples. The Ribchester Roman Museum is a great place to find out more.
