The Löwenberg blocking point forms the eastern end of the defense line between Saane (Laupen) and Lake Murten. It is part of a defensive position that builds on the three lakes and takes up the idea of the defensive line laid out in the First World War. The facility, built from the end of November 1940 by the 2nd Division and its Murten fortification office, comprises 15 bunkers, half a dozen more modern shelters and three anti-tank obstacles. The works took the place of earlier field fortifications on this line. The construction of the motorway changed the fortification system fundamentally, but in return it received the latest anti-tank weapon system for the fortress (Centi bunker).
