The casino has two play areas - an upscale, to which one is admitted only with appropriate cloakroom, and a simpler, in which one also in normal everyday clothing is admitted.

The Casino opened in 1931, although the first stone was laid in 1916 by President Bernardino Machado. It was a meeting point for spies and aristocrats during World War II and served as inspiration for Ian Fleming's novel Casino Royale.
