Poppendorf was originally a Slavic place. In the period from 1179 to 1227, large numbers of German settlers immigrated to what is now Mecklenburg. This started the process of Christianization. In 1513 Poppendorf was bought directly by the Lühe siblings. Around 1704 Poppendorf belongs to Ribnitz as a monastery village.

In 1911 Poppendorf was subordinate to the Ribnitz monastery, there were 2 leaseholders, 4 Hüfner quarters, 11 Büdner residents, 1 windmill and 1 school. In the 30s there was also a good celebration in Poppendorf. The children's festival was celebrated on the fairground in the forest. The royal shooting was also carried out there. The sports clubs Jahnkendorf, Poppendorf, Allerstorf also held sports festivals and handball games.

There was also a one-class school in Poppendorf. All students were taught by the teacher in a classroom. Children from Jahnkendorf and Allerstorf also went to school here. In 1932 there was no longer enough space. Because of overcrowding, a second class was set up, which was moved to Jahnkendorf.
