The mausoleum, originally built as a family crypt in 1895/96, is now a public urn grave. The banker Wilhelm Adolf von Carstanjen had the building built for himself and his family. It was the largest private mausoleum on the Rhine. After a period of neglect, the mausoleum was opened as an urn site in 2006 after renovation by a specially established community foundation. While the Landhaus Carstanjen, a little further north and back, can hardly be seen from the riverside path, the mausoleum is a striking landmark between Bonn and Bad Godesberg.
