600 years ago it would have been your death sentence. Nobody went here voluntarily. Why? The name suggests it. In the Middle Ages and early modern times, the Leper House of the city of Arnsberg was housed here, far outside the city walls of Arnsberg. Back then, lepers were isolated from the rest of the population in leprosy houses or leprosories. Leprosy was one of the great epidemics at the time, there was no cure. The only way to prevent the disease from spreading was to strictly isolate the sick from the rest of the population. For this purpose, they were housed in remote places in leprosories and mostly looked after by monks. The disease was usually fatal, but often years could pass. Medical therapies against leprosy have only been available since 1916.
