A monument to honor the fallen. And at the same time a beautiful place to let your gaze wander over the wide, open landscape.

The memorial was erected in 1923/24 in memory of the fallen soldiers from Burgbernheim.

Memorial for "the heroes who remained on the field of honor" of the 1st and 2nd World War in Burgbernheim. After the prisoners of war returned on March 14, 1920, due to the empty municipal treasury, a "hero's grove" made of 64 young oaks 🌳🌳 in the form of an iron cross was created. This natural monument is located on the northwest slope of the Ascension Mountain and can be seen from afar. After there was a very good sale of oak in 1923/24, the town council decided to build a memorial calculated for long-distance effects. This was advertised nationwide in the form of an architects' competition. Architect Fritz Mayer from Nuremberg won the competition. The total cost was around 13,500 gold marks. The monument consecration took place on May 9, 1925 among unter five to six thousand guests.
The building itself consists of Rothenburg shell limestone, the interior of Hilpertshofer stones and the inscriptions are carved on Lichtenfelser slabs.
