On the outskirts of Ippesheim we passed the huge “Peace Oak”, which was planted in 1871. Oaks were called “peace oaks” when they were planted as memorial trees to a war won and the peace that followed.

On March 11, 1871, Georg Heinrich Beigel and his son Johann Bernhard planted this peace oak. Oaks of peace are called oaks that were planted as memorial trees to commemorate a won war and the peace that followed. In Germany, these were mainly planted as a memorial to the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71.
