Clemens was born into a noble family around the year 50 in Rome. According to tradition, he heard sermons of the apostle Barnabas, was converted by him and followed him and the apostle Paul as disciples. Clemens was baptized and adopted by Barnabas. Peter led. Clemens was ordained bishop of Rome by Apostle Peter.
