The first document referring to it dates back to 995 where there is mention of a placitum between the great nobles of Romagna and the representatives of the archbishop of Ravenna.
Coveted for its undisputed strategic value, the Fortress did not only carry out military tasks. From the mid-15th century, with the presence of the Malatesta family and, subsequently, of the bishops of Bertinoro, the fortress lost its military function in favor of its cultural role: Domenico Novello Malatesta moved part of the book workshop of the future to the Bertinoro fortress Library of San Francesco, while the bishops, observing the dictates of the Council of Trent, made it a place of education and training.
