The market square in Stendal is one of the sights of the city, which is also a railway junction.

The Stendaler Rathaus is a historic building in the Hanseatic city of Stendal. The building was built in various architectural styles, but dates mainly from the 15th century.
It is dominated by Gothic and Renaissance elements. Near the town hall are the Marienkirche and a Roland. Worth seeing inside is the carving wall from the year 1462, which is considered to be the oldest profane woodcarving north of the Alps.
On May 3 and 4, 1945, negotiations took place in the town hall Stendal between German and American officers regarding a capitulation of the German 9th and 12th Army to the US. Army instead.

In the 12th century, a Romanesque basilica was built on the site of today's St. Mary's Church, of which today still a part of the equipment is preserved. In the late 14th century, the western building was extended with the double tower facade; the towers were extended.
In 1420, the construction of the new St. Mary's Church began as a late-Gothic hall church. On the south side a portal porch, called Paradise, was built. The Romanesque predecessor building was demolished a few years later. Until 1447 the church was vaulted. The church was consecrated on August 24, 1447. 1470-1473, the Marienzeitenkapelle was built. In 1471 the high altar was erected. After the Reformation in 1538 it was Justus Jonas the Elder, who held the first Protestant sermon in the Margraviate of Brandenburg in the Marienkirche. In the 16th century, the towers were completed. 1580 an astronomical clock was attached. The Marienkirche was the main parish church of the Hanseatic merchants.
During the Thirty Years' War, the Jeronimos Altar was abducted because it was believed that it had been created by Albrecht Dürer. He stands today in the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna. Paradise was demolished in 1794 and a sandstone relief of 1420 was placed above the portal.
1834-1844 and 1965-1971 major repair work took place. From 1995 the roof was covered with copper, several bells were restored and the windows were re-glazed.
