The upper octagonal part of the tower, which also housed the guardroom, was built around 1460/70. The oriels on the tower were used to enable the guards to see in all directions. On top of the tower is a crenellated platform. Drainage is via four gargoyles.
The owl tower was located at the inner gate. A little further north, just before the turn to Schlossfreiheit, was the front gate. Both gates were connected by Zwinger walls. The beginning of the inner archway can still be seen on the south-west corner of the tower. A walkway led over this archway into the tower. This entrance was later walled up.
In 1871 the front gate was demolished. At the end of the 1880s, the city wall to the north of the tower was demolished. The former connection of the city wall to the tower can still be seen today. Since then the tower has been free.
