The history of this stunning palace goes as far back as C14. The building dates from C16, but was exhaustively rebuilt in 1720s and 1870s to assume its current Baroque and Renaissance Revival form. In front of it there are the remnants of a French formal garden complete with some striking if dilapidated architecture. Until 1945 the palace was the seat of the von Hochberg noble family, curiously headed by a succession of Hans Heinrichs, numbered in a truly royal fashion up to XVIII. It sprung to international fame in 2020 when it was reported that 28 tonnes of nazi gold is buried there. Presently the palace is owned by a foundation charged with its restoration.
