In 1932 the area became the property of the municipality of Hilversum. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the site was used as a flow field for the adjacent sewage treatment plant. Industries from Hilversum-East also discharged their wastewater there.[2] As a result, many toxic substances ended up in the soil. Nature in the area had become very nutrient-rich due to all the phosphates in the soil. The area became overgrown with reeds and willows. When the area dried up in a hot, dry summer, the contaminated sludge began to drift. This created a dangerous situation.
