The knights of Lauterbach were once at home in the town of the same name. In the 14th century, the manor house, mentioned in 1304, became an outbuilding for Crimmitschau Castle. Burned down in 1701 and then rebuilt in neo-renaissance style in 1884.
The castle has been privately owned by an artist since 2004, who is gradually renovating it.

The castle is surrounded by a small park (approx. 7,000 m²) with trees from the construction period and green areas and is part of the "Henry-van-de-Velde-Route".
